It goes without saying that nobody likes a rat, well there may be a few people on the planet that enjoy these animals, and there are many varieties of rodents that can be domestic house pets, but for the sake of this article, we are going to be talking about wild rats. Some people may find these types of rats to be cute, but the majority of people are not too fond of these critters, and wouldn’t mind never having to deal with them in their daily lives. These wild rats also come in a variety of species and sizes, ranging from smaller roof rats to large Norwegian rats, which are the largest variety that thrive in the Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, and Brevard County areas. We can tell you that although these different species may have slightly different appearances, their behavior and habits are quite similar across the spectrum; they invade people’s homes and businesses, causing disturbances and destruction on many different levels, all leading to annoyed homeowners and business owners.

Although every living thing has its place in the ecosystem and rats certainly do have their place on the totem pole, they are in fact overpopulated, classified as a nuisance, and are indeed showing no signs of using prophylactics to slow their population growth. This coupled with the large amount of new construction and land clearing occurring in Brevard County in recent years makes for a perfect storm where more houses than ever are being affected by these little critters living in the attics of people’s homes. Although these animals have their place, we believe that their place is not meant to be in your attic or in your house living above your heads, and we want to discuss in this post some common signs of rats in your attic; what to look for and what you can do if any of these signs pertains to you and your property.

Noises in the Attic?

This may sound like a no brainer but you would be surprised, and so we must talk about this common sign first and foremost. The attic in your home has a specific purpose, which is to help insulate the home and provide and structure for the roof and can also be used for storage, but attics do not make noise on their own. Yes, with any home, there will be creaking of wood beams, but the noises we are talking about are scratching, clawing, and scurrying types of noises coming from above your head in your attic space, this most certainly means that there is something living up there that should not be. There are many types of wildlife animals in the Melbourne, Palm Bay areas that can gain access to an attic, but the most common critter is definitely rats, and they make a ton of noise so for most people dealing with them in the attic, it’s pretty evident something is up there.

One thing to consider when listening for noises is what time of day the noises are occurring, rats are nocturnal and thus sleeping during the day. Rats become active around dusk and will remain active throughout the night until the go to sleep around dawn. Most people will notice the noises when trying to go to sleep at night but will be unable to because of the clawing and scurrying occurring above their heads, this is a good sign that you have a critter in your attic and it is time to call a professional wildlife removal company.

Imagine that you have been hearing noises in the attic or maybe you are reading this article and we have scratched your curiosity; you want to take a peak in your attic and explore a little. The first thing we will say is be careful, make sure you understand how to walk in an attic before you go up there or you may end up falling through your own ceiling and we do not want anyone getting hurt, the next thing to make sure of is proper lighting, whether there are lights installed in your attic or you need to bring a flashlight, it is important to have ample lighting before going up there to avoid falling or injury. Once this is taken care of we can go have a look and see what we find. When rats get into an attic and start to set up their homes, there are habits that they form and certain paths that they prefer to follow over time, and this will result in paths and tunnels that will form in your insulation as they travel these routes over and over. When looking at the insulation in your attic, look for areas that are matted down, or have tunnels and burrowing showing in different sections, rats are the only animals that do this so this will be a sure sign that rats are in the attic space. Another typical sign of rats in the attic space is droppings that they leave behind, rats are not known to be particularly clean animals and they produce a large volume of droppings every night, so if there are rats in your attic, you will see droppings. These droppings can be on top of the insulation or below it so it is sometimes important to move some insulation around and try to get a good look underneath. One last thing about rats is that they are little explorers and so the evidence they leave behind will be spread out throughout the attic rather than clustered in one general location. This means that you should not have to search the deep dark corners of your attic to figure out if they are up there, it should be readily visible throughout the entire attic space if you have any of these critters living up there. Again, we must stress to be careful whenever up in the attic, and if you have any hesitation of walking or crawling up there, do not hesitate to call a professional wildlife removal company and have them come perform an inspection, which is usually free of charge with an attached estimate for different services, this will always be your best bet on confirming that there are critters or no critters in the attic.

The last topic we wanted to put in this article has to do with what the outside of a home or business looks like, now we must say that just because your home or business has any of these signs, this does not necessarily mean that you have animals in your attic, but it does mean that you are susceptible to home invasion from these critters and you should definitely fix the problems before something does get inside. The first thing we will discuss is your air conditioning system, these units are usually placed on the outside perimeter of the home and have a copper line carrying Freon that one way or another makes its way into the interior structure of the house, what we are focused on is the penetration point of that Freon line. These areas where Freon lines go into home are often times left exposed to rat entry as well, whether an open chase box going through the soffit, or a hole in the stucco that has just had some expanding foam put in it, if a Freon line can get into the home, there a rat most certainly can also get it. Not all ac units are installed this way so whenever doing an inspection of the ac system, look to see how the copper line actually gets into the home and this should indicate if repairs or animal proofing is require to seal this area. The next biggest thing we want to discuss is the soffits installed on the under eaves of the home. Soffits are very important to help ventilate the attic; they allow excess moisture and heat to escape the attic while simultaneously guarding against driven rain soaking your insulation in the attic. Unfortunately, most soffits these days are constructed with thin aluminum or plastic vinyl, which do not stand a chance against a determined rat with a set of teeth that can chew through about anything. If you have any damaged or missing soffit on your house, then the first thing you must do is get this repaired or replaced. Once this is completed, it will be necessary to do a full inspection of the soffits, looking for anything that touches them; this could be tree branches, bushes, cable wires, or ac chase boxes. These all allow a rat the chance to climb up and begin chewing on the soffits until a hole big enough is made for them to gain entry. These areas can be repaired with different types of sheet metal or trim coil installed which rats are unable to chew through. We must say again, that many soffit areas are hard to get to and some require roof access for inspection, always call a professional wildlife removal company to perform these in depth inspections of the soffits as they are trained in what to look for and have the necessary tools and equipment to get to some of these hard areas.

There are more signs that you may have rats in your attic and as we release more educational material on these topics, we will start to cover more. This article focused on some of the bigger and more common problems that homeowners in the Brevard County area are facing and we wanted to start here to help you get started. We hope this article has been educational to whoever has the opportunity to read it and we must always stress that if you have any of these signs around your home or business that you leave wildlife removal to the professionals. We can’t wait to release more information to inform the public on this ever increasing problem facing our communities and we thank you all for your support and comments on our material.

Are there Bats in my Attic?

In today’s modern world, there is an increasing zeal and desire for wanting to take care of the Earth and all that is in it, this can include anything from shifting to more renewable energy sources, using less pesticides when growing food, using more reclaimed and environmentally friendly building materials to reduce deforestation, and many more steps humans are taking to care for this wonderful planet we have been put on. The world we live in today is a wonderful place, full of life and life in such variety it is almost hard to comprehend at times, if you have ever traveled to different parts of America or to different parts of the world, you know exactly what we are talking about, Earth is a pretty cool place and we should desire to keep it that way. You may be asking yourself if we have made a mistake in titling this article, how does caring for the environment have anything to do with bats in a person’s home. Let me reassure you that we have not made a mistake and that understand animals and the role that they play in the world is a key part of learning and working in the wildlife removal industry.
Bats play are very important role in the environment, especially in the Melbourne Florida and central Florida areas, if we cannot understand what role the play and how important they actually are, we are doing them a disservice when we exclude them from a person’s home. Bats are much more common in Florida than you might think, they are nocturnal so you may not see them, but trust us when we say that they are everywhere and they are extremely hard working at what they do, which is devour mosquitoes on a nightly basis. Bats eat approximately their own bodyweight in mosquitoes every single night, that’s right, every single night when they feed. If you can imagine trying to eat your bodyweight in anything, you probably quickly understand that we are meant to do that, but fortunately they are. They provide one of the greatest services for people in the Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, and central Florida areas by massively controlling the mosquito population. Without bats and a few other animals, mosquitoes would quickly dominate this area through sheer numbers, making this one of the least desirable places to live on the planet. Imagine walking outside and being swarmed by 100x the amount of mosquitoes that currently exist in Florida, doesn’t sound like too much fun. Next time you are outside and get a couple bites during a warm summer evening, just remember how bad it could be if we didn’t have those wonderful hunters working for us on a nightly basis, and this is why we love bats.
Now that we understand the environmental utility of bats and the fact that we love having bats in and around our communities, let’s take the rose colored glasses off for a second and look at things from a more “human” viewpoint. We will just say it plain and clear, bats are dirty little animals that although have their place, can still be a nuisance to homeowners, and can even cause health risks for humans living in close proximity to them. Like any animal in Brevard County, bats need a place to stay; they need shelter during the day and protection from the elements. Unfortunately for us, our homes provide them with a place that meets all of their needs and much more which is why we want to educate people on how to spot bats living in your home and how to properly get rid of them without harming them or upsetting the delicate environmental balance that they help keep. In the next several sections, we will explore some common signs that you as a homeowner can look for on and in your home to help better understand if you are dealing with a bat related wildlife issue, and hopefully point in the right direction. Here are some signs that you have bats living in your home.

Noises coming from the Attic and Soffit Areas

The first and easiest way to tell if you are dealing with bats living in your home is to listen for them. They are living animals and they make a fair amount of noise, even during the day when they are inactive, they still often make noise in order to communicate with each other. The noises that they make you have probably actually heard at some point if you have ever seen them flying around at night feeding. Bats have incredibly poor eyesight and use echolocation as a means of navigation instead of traditional eyesight. This serves them very well and they are incredibly skilled flyers at night, they are able to catch mosquitoes in mid-flight in pitch dark and that skill should speak for itself.

The fact that they use echolocation to navigate also has an effect of what type of noises they produce. Whether at night or during the day, whether hunting or communicating with each other, they use a high pitched “squeak” or “chirp” type of noise in order to see and to talk with one another. This “squeaking” is very high pitched but is still discernable to the human ear, so if you are nearby bats, you will most likely be able to pick up on these noises. Bats love to live in colonies, sometimes small, sometimes large, but they are definitely pack animals and love social interaction. This often results in several bats making noises simultaneously which only help us pick up on the noises. As mentioned in the introduction, our homes offer bats a wonderful place to nest and hang out…no pun intended, during the daytime. They either live inside the soffit areas or inside the attic space which connects to the soffit areas on a house; these areas provide ample shelter and airflow to keep them cool during those hot summer days. If you have a suspicion that you may be dealing with bats, we always suggest calling a professional wildlife removal company to come a perform an inspection, but you also have the ability to walk around your home and listen, either during the day or night for high pitched chirps coming from the soffits, you can even climb into the attic space and listen to see if you hear any noises coming from any part of the attic space. Again, we always stress that you must be careful when doing this and if bats are heard, please immediately call a professional to remove them humanely, so they can continue to eat mosquitoes every night, which is what we want.

Droppings and Oil Marks on the Roof and the Soffits

As mentioned in the above section, bats love to nest in the soffits of our homes and then gain entry into the attic spaces through the soffits. They do not enjoy being close to the ground and will naturally look for high places of entry to nest in, whether it is the trees, a bat house, or your home, they enjoy being elevated in their shelters, you will never find them nesting in a crawl space below a home and this is not their nature. But if we are unable to hear any noises, how else can we tell if there are bats living in the soffits? Well thankfully for us, bats are quite oily animals and they also produce a large amount of guano which is the term for their droppings. Most entry points on a home are not going to be very large, in fact, they can often be as small as the size of a quarter and that is all the room the bats need to squeeze into their new home above your head. This “squeezing in” as well as the constant flapping of their wings will almost always leave some sort of residue or oil/rub marks on the aluminum or vinyl soffit which is what most are made of. The most visible sign of entry are darkened spots of soffit around areas called roof returns which are the most common entry points for bats. If you have a white, or neutral colored soffit, you will often see what looks like brownish splotches that only show up in one or two areas, this is a clear sign that a bat or bats are consistently coming in and out of that area, leaving a buildup of natural body oils over time. Now upon entry, the bats very much enjoy the soffits due to airflow, as soffits commonly have pin holes punched in them to allow for attic ventilation. Like we said, bats produce a large amount of guano daily which tends to look like small black pellets. Over time after significant build up from a colony, these droppings will start to make their way through the soffit ventilation holes. This will become visible on the roof and will begin to pile up and may even begin to cause a strong odor if you are close or if the wind is in the right direction. Again, we must constantly stress that if you see any visible oil/rub marks, or begin to see guano dropping from the soffit and on to the roof, it is most certainly time to call a professional, as bat guano is harmful to breath in or be around, creating a health hazard. It is just better to leave this one to people who are trained and equipped.

Bats are flying out of your Home

This last sign that we will briefly discuss about determining if you are dealing with a bat issue in your home might sound like a no-brainer, but it is also the easiest to conduct and can give you quick peace of mind when examining your home out of curiosity. If a small colony of bats has just moved into your soffit or attic space in the last day or so, there is likely to be no visible evidence for some time. They move in overnight but the oil marks and droppings take time to build up, and if you have a large or tall house, the colony could very well be living in an area that you are unable to get close enough to hear any noises from them, so how can you tell you might ask. Well, we first need to understand a basic principle about bats; they do not enjoy the sun. If you can think back to the last time you saw Dracula, you understand that he comes out at night and must go back into his coffin before the sun comes up lest he die. Bats are not going to burn up if they get hit with a few rays of sunshine but they certainly make a habit of coming back home to shelter as the sun is rising. They are nocturnal and therefore if they are living in your home then it will be very easy to see them fly out during dusk or fly back in at dawn. Whether you are an early riser or a night owl, you have two times of the day in which you can walk around your home and keep a sharp eye for any movement coming out of the soffits. Since bats are colony animals, it is typical for them to fly around their entry point for an hour or so waiting for the rest of the colony to either exit for the night or enter for the day. During dusk or dawn, if you see a number of bats flying around a certain area of your roof or soffits, that would be a good sign that they are living somewhere in that area, and then it is time to call a professional to take a closer look.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that we love bats, and you should love them to, they perform a wonderful service for the people that live around them and have an important part in our delicate ecosystem, we love bats, but we don’t love them living in our homes. If you are a homeowner and you are dealing with a bat issue, we have said it before and we will say it again, leave this to the professionals. They are trained, equipped, and knowledgeable about how to humanely remove bats from your home without endangering any humans or any bats, you can rest easy that your home is bat free and the bats are still able to do what they do best. We hope this post has been informative and educational for anyone who might read this and we look forward to posting more on bats and other animals in the Brevard County Florida area.

Are there Rats or Squirrels in my Attic?

Living in the great state of Florida, particularly Brevard County comes with an enormous amount of benefits but with anything, there exists a second side of the coin, we will call it the dark side of Florida. This may be different for many people but in our line of work, the trade-off for ample sunshine and warm weather year round is that people are not the only ones who enjoy these conditions, animals do as well. Animals living in Florida enjoy the weather just as much as humans do, they don’t have to worry about sub-zero temperatures as it never gets that cold here, there is no hibernation season, and plant life grows year round here giving wildlife a bounty to eat from no matter what season is upon us. Unfortunately for many people in Melbourne and Palm Bay, these critters not only love the weather here, but our homes and businesses offer them a plethora of choices when it comes to shelter, and they do utilize these options without hesitation.

As the population continues to skyrocket in Florida in the last ten years, the problem of wildlife gaining entry into homes and businesses has increased dramatically as well, most likely due to massive construction projects tearing down their natural habitats. There are many types of nuisance animals living in Florida that can cause headaches for homeowners but dealing with them does not always look the same. We are seeking to help the Florida homeowner better understand how these animals act, what you can do to mitigate problems, and most importantly, how to determine what type of animal you are dealing with.

Whether the trees are teaming with squirrels running around, or a variety of bugs trying to drain you of your blood, wildlife activity never stops in this state, so it is important to know how to protect yourself and your home from potential risks. In the world of wildlife removal, two animals that generate a lot of calls for pet control companies are rats and squirrels, the customers however often complain about these animals in similar fashion.
This is the first and usually easiest question for a customer to answer when talking with a professional about the animal in the attic, this can even usually be answered over the phone, but again, on-site inspections are always required. This is one of the first questions that we ask when we come to a house and begin discussing with a customer what kind of problem they are dealing with. If you have a critter in your attic, then it is 100% of the time going to make some sort of noise when it goes about its routine, and a homeowner is usually very easily able to tell if they are hearing noises at night which may keep them from getting to sleep, or if they are hearing noises during the day while up and about during their day. Although strange things can happen when dealing with wild animals and they can occasionally be unpredictable, most of the time the stick to their natural habits and we can easily determine what kind of animal it is just be hearing when the client is hearing noises. We explain it in simple terms when trying to figure out if it is a rat or a squirrel we are dealing with. Simply put, rats are nocturnal and squirrels are diurnal. Rats will be inactive and sleeping during the day and will begin to become active around dusk and remain active and awake throughout the night while squirrels are exactly the opposite, squirrel’s sleep at night and are active during the day. With just one simple question, we can already eliminate one of the two, if you hearing scratching and scurrying during the night, it is a rat issue, and if you hear noises in the attic during the day, it is a squirrel issue.

You do some investigation and figure out that these bats not only like flying around your home, but they enjoying nesting in it as well, Uh-Oh, what to do now.

When getting estimates from any wildlife removal company in the Brevard County area worth their salt, the company should always involve a thorough attic inspection. The animals are living in the attic, therefore the professionals need to go inside and take a look to make sure what’s going on, if they do not, do not hire that company. Both rats and squirrels live in the attic spaces as they love the shelter and protection it offers, but they treat the spaces very differently, and it should be apparent what type of animal is living up there after inspection. The biggest difference between what an attic with rats looks like and an attic with squirrels is the animal droppings. Rats are notorious for leaving droppings wherever they go, and even around their very nests, while squirrels are known for leaving almost zero droppings in and around their living spaces. When we are conducting an attic inspection, the presence or non-presence of animal droppings is a dead giveaway of what type of animal could be living up there. If an estimator crawls up into the attic and immediately sees animal small animal pellets, then we know that it is not a squirrel as this is contrary to their natural behavior. If an estimator crawls in at attic that has “noises” coming from it and see a clean attic with nothing but drywall and insulation, we know that it is most likely a squirrel issue, as they are the cleaner of the two and leave their droppings outside their domicile. So by now, after asking just one question and taking a quick look inside the attic, a professional wildlife removal estimator should have a good idea of what type of issue is occurring and how to deal with it, but there are still more ways to tell.

Where are the Noises coming from?

One part of the process of putting together a plan for a customer to deal with their wildlife issue is asking plenty of questions, this is an integral part of understanding what they are dealing with and choosing the right avenue to approach the problem from, excluding squirrels is different from trapping rats and it is important to understand what exactly is going on before formulating a plan. One of the common questions asked of the customer is what part of the house are they the hearing the noises come from. The answer to this question will usually shed more light on what type of animal we are dealing with if we have not already determined what is causing the noises in the attic. The behaviors of rats and squirrels is similar but in the same respect quite different, they both live in attic spaces, but one sleeps and night and the other during the day. Both rats and squirrels live in attics, yet one leaves droppings everywhere and the other does not, and lastly, both rats and squirrels live in attics but they tend to be active in different parts of the attic. Rats are known to be little explorers, whenever they infiltrate an attic space, there is no crack or crevice they will not at some point explore, leading to homeowners hearing noises in all parts of the house, in the walls, over all the bedrooms, and over all living spaces. This varies quite a bit from how squirrels move through an attic as they tend to keep toward the outside edges of the house and tend to make their nests inside the soffits of a house. They enjoy the airflow to help regulate body temperatures, we all know how hot Melbourne Florida can get in summertime. So when asking a customer about the location of the noises, if they are telling us that they only hear it on the edges of the house, then that would lead us to believe that they are dealing with a squirrel running in the soffit versus if they are telling us that they noises seem to come from everywhere, this more often than not means rats in the attic. Rats will use the soffits as well, but squirrels tend to stay in the soffit areas while rats will go even into the central parts of the attic.

Conclusion

Through this blog it was our goal to educate the public on the do’s and don’ts of bat removal and what to look for when hiring a professional. We hope anyone who sees this becomes more informed but we especially want to reach out the people of Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, and Suntree as we are aware of how bad the problem is in these areas of central Florida. Remember that whenever dealing with a bat issue in your home or business, always hire a professional, this is not the type of job to try yourself, you could get seriously hurt and potentially very sick even to death. When reviewing what company you want to hire to perform a bat removal, always make sure they are licensed and insured, have them explain to you how they perform a seal up exclusion in order to ensure they are sealing up the entire home and are conducting a humane bat removal, ask them about guano clean up and make sure they explain to you the protective equipment they use to ensure their health as well. There is obviously more we could talk about concerning bat removal as we will discuss more in later blogs, we just wanted to get this out there to educate the public on what options they have when dealing with bats in their homes or business. We hope this has been informative and we look forward to putting out more material in the future.

Sometimes the plans we make in this life do not always go quite as we expected as many of us know and understand, life has a tendency to throw a couple curveballs our way now and again. These curveballs life throws at us can take many forms, whether an unexpected accident that leads to an emergency room visit, a car breaking down that we desperately needed to keep working, a natural disaster that destroys house and home, or even something such as unexpected intruders coming into our home uninvited. These are just a few examples of some of the things we face in life, some more than others, they all seem quite different in their own respect but the one thing they all have in common, they all cost us money from out of our pocket.

When rats come into the home, they come to stay, they never plan on leaving if they are not forced to and can quickly become a big problem to a homeowner. Rats leave droppings everywhere which can turn the attic and ductwork into a health hazard, they chew on electrical wires which can cause a fire hazard or need for repair, they damage soffit and siding on the exterior of a home, and most noticeably they run around the attic all night keeping those living in the home awake and wondering what is causing the stampede in the attic and the walls. In previous posts, we have briefly talked about some of the areas on the exterior of a home that provide entry points for rats and other wildlife to get into the attic space and then into the rest of the home, and we will touch on those again in this post, but we wanted to focus more on informing the public on how much this can cost, what to look out for when hiring a wildlife removal company so you don’t get ripped off, and what types of common services these companies offer and the going rates for the services.

Let us first begin with taking a look at the first step in the process when removing rats from the attic, which is called the seal up exclusion. In this step after you have chosen a legitimate company to hire, a technician will perform construction repairs on the outside of the home in order to seal the house from anything coming in or going out, this is very important because only after this step can you effectively trap the critters that have already gotten inside. This is by far the first and most important step in the process of ridding yourself of these unwanted guests for good but can also be the most expensive, so watch out and make sure you educate yourself on exactly what needs to be done. Many people believe that a flat rate applies to these types of services and that couldn’t be farther from the truth when estimating seal up exclusions, rates of service will always depend on the house and how it was built.

In our experience, most people don’t understand just how many entry points can potentially be on a single home, with larger homes usually offering more entry points than smaller homes but not necessarily, it all depends on the construction.

The type of roof that a home has and the number of roof returns, the type of soffit construction, the number of electrical conduits and ac Freon lines going into the home, as well as additions to the home such as a back porch or lanai can all provide a way for the critters to get inside and all must be dealt with. When removing rats from an attic, you have to seal up every single entry point, if you do not then you are just wasting money, rats are intelligent and they have a very strong will to live, and if you leave one way they can still get in and out, they will find it and will continue to do their things until you fix it, so never hire a company that just wants to fix one entry point and then be done, every single entry point must be addressed or you will never fix the problem.

Now that we know that there are no flat rates for exclusion work, let’s explore how a wildlife removal company looks at a home when doing estimates. When I used to show up to a home and greet the customer, the first thing I always wanted to do what take a look around the outside perimeter of a home to get a feel for how much actual work was needed to seal up the home properly. What type of material is the roof made of and how many returns were there on the roof? How steep was the roof and was there any special equipment or safety gear that was going to be needed in order to reach some of the areas that needed to be sealed up? Are there any additions to the home that could have a potential entry point? Was the house on stilts with a crawl space or was it on a concrete slab? How was the ac and electrical run into the home, did it go through an outside wall or was it all buried underground? These are all categories that an estimator will or should take note of when perform an on-site estimate. We could go into much more detail on how estimators think and price out jobs but we don’t want to get tied up in the nitty gritty, what we want is for you to understand that this is a dangerous job, and this type of work is not easy and has to be priced appropriately, prices will differ from company to company and so will the quality of work, which is why we always suggest getting many detailed estimates and comparing them before making any type of hiring decision. As a visual aid, we have made a rough chart to show what factors that go into pricing a rat removal job and a seal up exclusion, these are not exact prices as that can only be given after on-site estimates but you will at least be able to understand what drives a price up on a particular homes roof type only. This basic chart looks at two categories, the number of roof returns a home has and the steepness of the roof itself. For simplicities sake let’s assume that each home has the same number of roof returns and the same steepness to the pitch of the roof, this chart shows what is going to cost a customer more and what would cost the least amount.

The height of the columns represents money and therefore the taller a column is, the more money a company will usually charge. We can clearly see that metal and tile roofs will cost the most money to seal up with shingle being the least expensive, given that each roof has the same number of returns and the same steepness. Remember that if you compared an extremely steep shingle roof with a relatively flat tile roof, the shingle roof would cost much more due to the inherent danger of being on a steep roof. But for this visual aid, all roofs are the same to give us a baseline comparison.

As mentioned above, no company will be able to give you an exact price for performing rat removal in the attic without first coming and doing an on-site inspection to look at the roof and the exterior perimeter, and we highly suggest that if they want to give you some price over the phone, hang up immediately and do not hire that company as that is a major red flag, you wouldn’t hire a roofer to replace your roof if he never came out and took a look at it would you? The same rule applies to wildlife removal companies as they are often doing work on your roof. Now that we have an elementary understanding of what causes different homes to be more or less expensive to work on, we can look at the next part of the job which comes directly after a seal up exclusion is performed on the home, and this is the trapping phase of the job.
The trapping phase is much easier to explain as it is very common for wildlife removal companies to have a flat rate for trapping animals in and around your home after you have hired them. At this point during the job most of the hard work has already been completed and now it is a matter of coming back and monitoring the job site, removing any rats that have been trapped, and making sure that the construction work that has been done on the home still looks good and undisturbed. Trapping rats in the attic after and exclusion usually takes a competent wildlife company about 7-10 days but can be longer or shorter depending on how bad the problem was to start with, occasionally the problem is solved in the first couple days of trapping and other times it can go on for weeks. This is the primary reason that companies charge a flat rate for trapping which usually ranges anywhere from $200-$500 depending on how many times the company is going to come back out to the house to remove trapped animals and perform on-going inspections. The customer at this point is paying the company for their time as the construction work has already been done and now it is just a matter of constantly checking whatever types of traps are in the attic and removing anything that gets caught until all animals have been removed.

We will remind you that whenever you sign a contract with a rat removal company, the trapping phase of the job is not indefinite and there will come a time when the trapping will end. This is something to discuss with them before signing anything. The industry standard is a company coming back out to the house 3-4 times to check the traps but everything is negotiable, some homeowners even save themselves money by doing the trapping themselves but this is not recommended as if they are unable to catch every critter in the attic, then they will have to spend more money to have the company come back out and perform another service, it is just better to the let the pros do it while they are already out at your home.

This post was meant to give a brief description of some of the items that drive pricing in the exclusion and trapping industry such as roof construction. It is our hope that this has been helpful to you and will at least give you an idea of where your own home will fit into the pricing sheet, unfortunately a large house can come with a price, especially when dealing with rat removal. We always suggest that you educate yourself on these matters by asking lots of questions whenever getting estimates on your home, ask the company what exactly they are going to fix, what type of materials they will use, how long will the trapping phase last, what is the protocol if they are unable to remove all the animals from the attic, and warrant information as well. We look forward to putting more information on the web for you all and taking a closer look inside the attic space and what you steps you can take to have total peace of mind.

How to Hire a Professional to Remove Bats

In today’s fast growing world, people have so many more options and choices in almost all areas of life; it can even be overwhelming for some. These choices can range from furniture and electronics, to many Do It Yourself items that can be assembled by yours truly. DIY projects are becoming more and more popular these days as people look for ways to save money by not having to hire a professional to do whatever the work may be, some things though we should continue to leave to the professionals. Most people have assembled a piece of living room furniture at one time or another but I guarantee most have not performed surgery; we tend to leave that to the pros. It goes without saying that somethings you are better not doing yourself, in this blog we are going to explore the options that one has when performing bat removal in Melbourne and Palm Bay Florida and the recommendations we have for solving whatever issue you may have.
As we briefly talked about, there are certain things that need to be done by professionals due to the skill required to complete the task, the equipment needed for completion, or perhaps the danger involved in the job. We are here to educate the public on these matters and our area of expertise is in wildlife removal, especially bat removal. Let’s clear the air real quick and say we never recommend doing it yourself when dealing with a bat issue in your home or business, this is a job for the professionals. If you are currently dealing with an issue of your own, do not attempt this and please call a professional wildlife removal company to help out, we don’t want anyone getting sick or hurt. We will also tell you that there are many things to look out for when hiring a professional company and we want to help make that choice as painless as possible by giving a few key things to look for before hiring anyone, let’s take a closer look.

License and Insurance

Whenever considering hiring a bat removal company, or any company for that matter, always make sure they are licensed and insured, this will give you the peace of mind knowing that you and your home are protected in case of damage, injury, or anything else that may go wrong. Never and we repeat never hire a company that is not licensed and insured, you are only putting yourself at risk and we never recommend this option. There are plenty of companies out there that are not licensed and insured and although they may be able to perform a bat removal without a hitch, if something were to happen or if they were to damage your house, you would have no way to deal with this. Making sure a company is licensed not only gives you the peace of mind knowing your home is protected when getting work done on it, but this also ensure that the company that you hired is perform the job in a safe humane way using best practices. As the saying goes, “There is more than one way to skin a cat” and this is true in the wildlife industry as well. There are safe and effective ways of removing bats from a home and there are dangerous and ineffective ways of doing it, hiring a company that is licensed and insured will make sure best practices are used. We said earlier that you want to hire a company that performs humane bat removal but what exactly does that mean? Let’s explore and take a closer look.

Alright, so you know where the bats are living now and where they could potentially live in the future, but now it is time to remove them, we want you to understand how this is performed so you can make sure the company you hired is doing this the same way. Bats tend to enjoy living in taller structures with plenty of cover and shelter from the elements. They tend to nest inside roof returns with soffit openings, gaps in a home’s vinyl or wood siding, inside gable vents and cupolas, as well as any structure on a home that gives height and shelter to the bats. Homes are built differently so some homes may have more potential nesting spots than others, but it is very important to identify all red flag areas in order to perform a complete animal seal up of the home. Once we have located all the spots, now it is time to begin the professional seal up exclusion. This is a two-step process where all non-active nesting sites are sealed off using a variety of techniques and a proper exclusion is perform in the active nesting sites. Bat exclusions use one of two methods to remove the bats, netting or bat valves are the primary means of getting the bats out of a home. The picture in this section of the blog shows one of our technicians performing netting on a home’s gable vent where bats were living. This is done by draping a net over the nesting area which allows the bats to “drop out” at night but in the morning when they come back to nest for the day, the net blocks there path and they are forced to go and find shelter somewhere else. Before this is done though, it is important that all other areas of the home that could become new nesting sites are sealed up to ensure that the bats don’t just move to another part of the home or structure. This technique is considered a humane way of performing a seal up exclusion because we preserve the bat lives.
Most people don’t understand how important bats are to the ecosystem, they are important for insect reduction as they eat their body weight in mosquitoes every single night. They have their place in the world and we don’t want to do anything that will harm that delicate balance, we just want to make sure they are not nesting in homes and structures. Now that we have explained how a company will perform a humane bat removal, let’s dive deeper in the exclusion part of the job where a house or home is permanently sealed up.

These areas are sealed by fixing any damaged soffit, putting a small amount of expanding foam in the return, and then troweling over the foam with concrete in order to animal proof the return, once the concrete is hardened there is no way a bat is getting back in.

This is definitely not a DIY project like we mentioned in the beginning of the blog, bat guano is extremely harmful if breathed in so companies must make sure to wear protective gear whenever working in these areas to avoid getting any guano into the lungs which could potentially be deadly. Always use a professional to perform a seal up exclusion on your home and any clean up that may be required. Bats produce a ton of droppings every day and chances are that if you have or have ever had bats in the soffit, then your soffit may be soiled and may need to be cleaned or replaced. The next picture in this section shows a small section of soffit that we removed in order to clean all the guano from the underside of the soffit so the homeowners had no health risks. Soffit can be cleaned with bleach and a pressure sprayer but sometimes it can be bad enough where the soffit may need to be fully replaced.

Summary

Thankfully there is an entire industry dedicated to help solve this ever increasing problem one house at a time.
It is important to understand first and foremost that when dealing with any type of wildlife, especially raccoons; it is always recommended to get licensed professionals to safely and humanely remove the animal rather than attempting to do it on your own. They are referred to as “wildlife” due to the fact that these are wild animals that can sick, diseased, aggressive, and are certainly unpredictable, especially when they feel threated which is certainly always the case.

We are focusing in this blog however on raccoons in particular, and like we have explained, there are a variety of ways that raccoons can cause property damage to a home in no time at all. Some of these include damage to roofs, soffit and fascia, gutters, as well as all the damage that can be done inside the attic. They are known to commonly leave large amount of droppings in attics which can pose a serious health risk to anyone living in the house, this usually results in attic restorations to remove any bio hazardous waste that could be potentially dangerous. Needless to say, raccoons in your attic are a serious problem and need to be dealt with immediately.
There is lot to know when it comes to dealing with different kinds of wildlife and how to approach the unique situations that each of them can cause, but our desire is to educate the public on these common problems facing our communities. There are many ways an individual or homeowner can be proactive when it comes to wildlife, and over the next several sections, we hope to explore five signs that raccoons are in your attic in Melbourne Florida, and how you can easily determine if there is a problem or not. We hope this is educational and enlightening to anyone facing this problem or anyone wishing to learn something new.

Most in this particular industry are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and become active throughout the night. This will usually result in a person hearing noises in the attic during the later hours of the night and the raccoons become active.

Every house makes noise in one way or another; wildlife noises however will be very distinguishable from common “house” noises. It is not too often that some creaking boards sound like claws or a tail dragging against drywall.
When these noises start to occur in someone’s homes, the first and most common issue that arises is being woken up from sleep throughout the night. Not every person are a heavy sleeper and usually at least one person in a home will be unable to sleep while something is crawling around in the attic. It is common for people to assume the animal will come and go and so they brush off the noises and give it a few days to see if the animal comes back. This is most definitely the wrong move, when there are noises in the attic, the best thing to do is to immediately call a wildlife removal company and get them out there. From our years of experience, we can tell you that if there is an animal in your attic, it is most likely setting up shop and has no intention of moving out unless you force them to. Let’s continue to explore some more easy ways to see if you might be dealing with raccoons.

Even if you don’t own a home and you are renting, chances are you notice when something looks good and when something looks damaged or out of place, well if you are one of these people then you should have no problem easily crossing this off your wildlife checklist. We are going to take a look at the roof of your house and the soffit as well. You might ask why and the reason is that if a raccoon has gotten into your attic, then there is obviously some type of entry point on the exterior of the home unless of course they rang the doorbell and you let them in, unlikely.

Every house is slightly different but there is a fair amount of common ground between different styles of home, they definitely almost always have a roof and some type of soffit which allows the attic to ventilate excess heat and moisture. Now between the two, raccoons get into the attic most often through the soffit, but they are strong enough to rip through shingle and plywood when motivated enough. Soffit is a much weaker material and is manipulated much easier by the raccoons. The above picture shows an area of a shingle roof house where a raccoon has gained entry in through a piece of soffit that has been pushed up, creating an opening which in turn becomes their front door. If you go outside your house and see an area of your soffit that looks similar to this, we highly recommend calling a wildlife removal company ASAP because you are probably not far off from hearing noises in the attic. Sometimes if you own or live in a large house, some of these areas called roof returns will be impossible to see from the ground and will require someone going onto the roof for a closer inspection. Whenever this is the case we always recommend calling professionals to do the dangerous work rather than risking your own health and safety.
So far we have briefly explored two simple signs that you have raccoons in your attic, but there are still a few we want to cover in this blog post. In the next section we will take a look at some common signs that you have raccoons from inside the attic.

We have reiterated this many times throughout the blog, but we must start this section off again by addressing the need for upmost safety when concerning these issues. Urine and Raccoon droppings scattered throughout your attic is a very good sign that you might have raccoons in your attic, but BE CAREFUL, these can be very toxic to breathe in so when dealing with these issues, it is recommended to leave it to the professionals to properly inspect and solve the problem in a safe way for you. Raccoons are notorious for nesting in people’s homes, it is almost always a female raccoon that has babies or is preparing to have babies. They break in, create their nest, and get ready to settle in for the next months while their babies grow and become strong enough to leave on their own. During these months, it is common that over time the mother and babies will deposit a large amount of droppings and urine on top of the insulation that exists in the attic, this is turn can make it dangerous to go into the attic and can even create health hazards within the home.

When this occurs, what usually needs to happen is the raccoon removal must be performed to remove the raccoon safely, and then a team needs to go in a remove all soiled insulation and sanitize the attic space before it does not pose a health risk. The amount of insulation that needs to be removed will vary on how bad the problem was and how long it was going on for. A small amount of insulation may be all that’s needs and sometimes every square in must be removed; we will discuss attic restoration on some of our later blog posts. Summarizing though, any kind of animal dropping inside the attic is a tell-tale sign that there is an animal in the attic and it’s time to call a professional wildlife removal company.

So far we have looked at and explore several different tips on how a homeowner can be proactive and try and determine if they are dealing with a raccoon problem. We have talked about different things to look for on the outside of the house and also what we can look for on the inside of the attic to help us paint a picture of what is going on. We talked about some common noises that point to raccoons such as clawing and scratching noises as well as loud thuds but there are others that can point to the same conclusion.

Baby raccoon noises are another very simple way to know and understand that there is definitely something going on up in your attic that needs addressing. Like we have previously discussed, the reason raccoons go into the attics is primarily due to females having babies, and like a good mother would do, she daily takes care of her young but providing for them while doing the same for her. This means that there are times when mama has to leave the babies alone while she leave and scavenges, which can leave the babies confused and scared. When frightened or scared they doing what most mammals do, they cry and they whimper, usually in a very high pitch as they call out for their mother. If you hear any type of cry or whimper coming from the attic or soffit of your house, you almost certainly have baby raccoons in your attic and mama is somewhere close by. If this is the case, immediately call a professional and have them come out and complete and inspection.

We all understand that in today’s world, people don’t seem to be as personable or approachable as they used to be, even next door neighbors won’t know a thing about each other. With this last tip on signs that raccoons are in your attic, we challenge each and everyone one of you to break the mold and go have a conversation with people in and around your neighborhood, it’s a great way to socially network the old fashioned way, and it helps strengthen the community as a whole. We recommend doing this because you will be surprised at what you can learn from your neighbors, and if one of them is reporting raccoon problems, this is a sign that you probably also have a problem. When a mother raccoon is preparing to have babies, she will create several different nesting sites to make sure she has back up plans if things go badly at any one of her nesting sites. This commonly means that in neighborhoods where raccoons frequent, multiple homes with be broken into by raccoons on the same night, often it is the same female raccoon scouting out new potential nesting sites. For this reason we say to ask around to see if any of your neighbors are dealing with any issues and if they are, it gives you an opportunity to be proactive and possibly deal with the issue right away, and you might make a new friend in the process, that’s what we call a win win.
It has been our pleasure making this blog post for the public to read and be educated on some signs that raccoons are in your attic, we hope this has been truly educational and we look forward to putting out much more content on raccoons as well and all other wildlife we deal with in the great state of Florida, until next time.

The central Florida area is one of the most travel-worthy destinations in the world due to the many vacation destinations such as resorts, theme parks, and miles of beautiful beaches on our coastlines. However amazing the State of Florida is, living here is a whole different animal from visiting for a week-long vacation on the beach. Permanent residents in Florida have without a doubt several challenges that they face each year, the summer heat, hurricane season, and animals in the attic. With a temperate climate and mild winters, wildlife is able to flourish in Florida year round. Residents are always dealing with some wildlife issue usually in the form of some nuisance animal such as many different types of rodents, which is why we have the desire to educate the public on how to deal with these critters.

Simply put, the name refers to how these animals one way or another get on top of a structure roof and find entry inside the structure, leaving someone with a critter in the attic, a very unenjoyable situation.

It might be hard to believe or even understand how an animal can first get on to the roof and them somehow find a way inside, do roofers leaves holes in roofs? This is a tricky question because if a roof is installed properly, there are no entry points that will allow water to get inside the house; this however does not mean that there are not holes for animals to find their way in. If you do know what you are looking for when looking at a structure, it doesn’t take long to see just how many ways a small animal is able to find its way inside and start to nest or live inside of the structure. Over the next several sections, we will attempt to explore in detail some of the more common areas on homes and other structures that allow animals to gain entry and how to deal with these issues that so many people face.

We previously touched on the fact that even with a properly installed roof on a person’s house, there are still “holes” or natural construction gaps that allow certain animals to enter a home. These construction gaps are found on every home and structure in one way or another, it is important to know that depending on the type of roof a person has, these can change. The most common types of, all these roof styles have similar areas that animals gain entry. These areas include but are not limited to roof returns, damaged soffit, and many types of attic vents. Roof returns refer to the area on your roof where two or more sections of roof meet and join one another. This typically happens with a section of roof overhangs another section of roof and can result in a natural gap that leads into the attic. Soffit refers to the vented paneling that is installed on a home’s under eave in order to allow heat and excess moisture to escape from the attic space.

You might be asking yourself, “Ok, I understand how an animal gets into an attic from the roof, but how are they able to get onto the roof in the first place.” Florida roof rats are incredible climbers, if you can imagine watching a squirrel climb and move through a tree, and then you can get an idea of what a rat is capable of as well. There is a large misconception about how athletic a common rat really is due to the fact that they are reclusive and nocturnal, so humans do not see them as often. Do not be fooled however, pound for pound, a roof rat is one of the most athletic and adept animals in the world and when push comes to shove, it is almost impossible to keep rodents from being able to get on to the roof. Overhanging trees, screened in enclosures as well as gutters and electrical lines act as highways allowing rats and other critters access to the roof. Once on the roof, if the house is not properly sealed then it is only a matter of time until a curious critter finds its way in.

This picture shows a roof return with several missing pieces of white vented soffit. This hole was most likely created during a high wind scenario where the soffit was ripped out, creating a hole for an animal in the attic, turning this area of the roof effectively into the front door to their home, which is your attic. We are focusing on rats in this blog but keep in mind that a variety of wildlife go exploring on peoples roofs and this hole in particular is big enough not only for roof rats, but for raccoons and other animals as well. This is a scenario where the homeowner usually needs to have this fixed soon to prevent anything getting inside.

Florida is a large state with a large population base…simply put there are a ton of homes and in recent years there is no sign of construction slowing down in the Sunshine State. Central Florida has a significant amount of undeveloped land still to this day that is rapidly being developed into shopping plazas, new neighborhoods, schools and new communities popping up. Recent reports show that Florida is not only a vacation destination, but people are coming here to live and grow roots, resulting in a high demand for more construction. Unfortunately this means that natural wildlife habitats are being destroyed and developed at an astounding rate. Undeveloped land in Florida is almost always teaming with life, small animals, large animals, fish and game all utilize nature and when humans take that away from them, they are forced to migrate and move or else face death. Survival instincts are present in every life form on the planet and rats are no different, when their homes are destroyed, they don’t just roll over and die but they move and set out to find a new home and place to live. This forced migration usually drives them into nearby neighborhoods where they find dozens of house just waiting for them to come on in and set up shop. We see in this industry that areas that are rapidly developing will usually have a high percentage of rodent activity due to the development.
Another factor to consider as far as construction goes is Florida’s weather, we have an extremely favorable climate for wildlife and our mild to non-existent winters allow construction and development to continue year round unlike many other areas in more northern parts of the country. Even though we are a very warm state we do occasionally have a cold front come through for a couple days and drop temperatures below freezing. Years of experience in the industry have taught us that animals feel the cold the same and you and I, and when it does get cold or we have a snap freeze, animals are quick to start seeking out warm areas to nest in and take shelter. The insulated properties of an attic offer a perfect safe haven for them to stay warm, dry, and protected until the weather becomes more favorable. The simple truth is there is no one reason why animals get into the attic, there is no one reason why they do anything, and they are wild animals and can be unpredictable. The important thing to understand is not why they are doing what they are doing, but what you can do to prepare for these issues and prevent any rats or other critters getting into the home.

What can you do?

In this blog we have tried to give the reader a basic understanding of some areas of the wildlife removal industry and an education on how and why animals get into people’s homes. Although there is still so much more we could write about and will do so in later blog posts, this post just scratches the surface of the animal removal business and we look forward to writing and educating more in the future. We have taken the time to give you key reason why this industry exists i.e. (natural construction gaps, Florida’s development, weather patterns, etc.), but we also want to briefly inform you on what steps you can take now in order to protect you from nuisance wildlife and the problems they can cause.
The first step that we recommend a homeowner take regardless of any existing wildlife issue is to call a professional wildlife removal company out to conduct a thorough inspection. This will allow them to inform you of any potential red flags that they see on your homes exterior and will also allow them to inspect your attic and determine if there is any evidence of animals in the attic. We stress that a homeowner call a wildlife removal company and not just a generic pest control company, who normally specialize in bugs, not rats. This will give you the peace of mind knowing that the company you hire knows exactly what they are doing. We also recommend NOT WAITING! Preventative maintenance and protection will always be less expensive than dealing with a problem after the wildlife has already gotten into the structure; this will save you money and a serious headache. We NEVER recommend trying to do this type of work in a DIY style; it usually involves getting into dangerous areas and working from heights off of ladders which can be very hazardous if not properly trained in safe techniques. It is better to leave it to the professionals who do it professionally, the quality of the work will be better, no health risk to homeowners, and wildlife removal companies will almost always warranty their work, again giving you peace of mind.
This industry, especially in Florida is not going anywhere, there will always be wildlife out there and people will always need homes to live in, making for a seemingly never ending struggle between man and beast. We are so thankful though that we have been able to shed light on this industry and hopefully have educated people on these issues and can point people in the right direction if they are currently dealing with an issue or seek to prevent something in the future. We will continue to post informative material on construction techniques to properly seal houses and structures, exclusions techniques for a variety of animals, and how to properly, safely and humanely trap animals that have gotten inside homes and attics. We hope this blog has helped and look forward to getting more material out there for everyone to read.

Every day in Brevard county we receive calls, emails and text from clients very anxious and upset because they hear noises in the ceiling, walls or attic.
The last thing anybody wants is to have rodents or wildlife running around up in their attic chewing their wires and ducts not to mention all the feces and urine that can be left behind to ruin your insulation.
Most people most people find out there’s something rooting around in their attic when they either hear the noises, go up inside the attic to get some holiday decorations or actually watch the critter entering somewhere on the roof or soffit.
From my 15 years experience in animal removal in Brevard county I’ve noticed it’s typically going to be rats, squirrels, raccoons or bats.

Let’s start with the first one: rats – whenever you have rats in your attic it’s going to be very obvious they are nocturnal animals so you’re going to hear most of your pitter-patter movement in the Attic at night typically when you’re laying in bed or sitting on the couch watching TV.
They’re also the easiest to identify up in the attic since they leave tunnels and droppings in the insulation and have very distinct urine smell. Rats can get down into your garage and chew into feed, plant food, fertilizers or whatever has an attractive smell to them.

Roof rats love to enter the attic through your soffit, ridge vents or any gap they can find on the building.

The worst part is you don’t even have to have a hole in your building they can make one by chewing through weak points. Ridding your attic of roof rats can be a pretty simple process if done right the first step is to perform an exclusion on the exterior of the building which means seal all of the holes the second step would be to set rat traps up in the attic “not mouse traps”!
The timeline for eliminating your attic of roof rats is different on every home you could catch all the rats in one night or it could take you weeks to months depending on the severity.
Once you’ve actually removed all of the rats from the attic you can perform an inspection to see if any insulation, wires or HVAC has been damaged.
You would obviously move on to any of those repairs once you’re fully confident you got all those pests out and they can’t get in ever again.

SQUIRRELS

The next critter we will talk about is the squirrel or a rat with a bushy tail.
I always find it very easy to identify squirrels because they tend to stay in the soffit area of the home and are not nocturnal and cause noises in the Attic mostly during the day, I like to say they’re on our clock.
When squirrels are nesting in your attic you tend to see them running all over the roof or on top of your screen enclosure.
The good part about squirrels versus rats is they don’t leave very many droppings in the attic and tend to have limited litters three to four babies in the fall or spring.
Traditional squirrel traps are not very effective when trying to remove squirrels from the attic or your yard since you’re competing with a lot of outside natural food sources.
Eliminating squirrels is a two-step process the first step we take we will go around the home and perform the exclusion seal up anywhere they can get in but we will not seal the main entry point because we will be placing a one-way door or a cone which allows the squirrels to exit the building but not re-enter.
The second step would be removing the squirrel exclusion device and sealing that last hole once you would complete this the problem would be solved. Once again want to go in your attic and just check to make sure no damage has been done to any wires or HVAC.

RACCOONS

The most stubborn and dangerous animal we deal with is the raccoon or as I would say the female raccoon because that’s the only raccoon you will get in the Attic just like squirrels the raccoon primarily nest in your attic because they’re having a litter of babies.
Raccoon noises in the Attic tend to be at night but you can also hear them during the day I always describe it as a slow moving almost dragging sound up in the attic and you can hear their claws on the drywall you can also see the female going in and out a couple times a day to get food and water.
The first thing people think to do when they have a raccoon living in their attic is to set a trap this is very ineffective and almost useless since the female will have no interest in the trap and if you do by luck catch her you could now be stuck with babies in an area you might not be able to get to. I would say 50% of the time customers have a raccoon in the Attic it’s not even living in the Attic it just broke through the soffit or the roof to investigate to see whether it wants to make it it’s den so a lot of times you want to monitor the hole and if it’s not active just repair it before she come back to make it her permanent residence. if it is active proceed with using a deterrent like a male raccoon hormone which is a natural predator to the female and the babies.
Raccoons tend to enter the Attic through a roof return or an area where the soffit meets your roof system that area tends to be weak and the raccoon is able to get leverage and just push it up or pull it apart to get in.
Once the raccoons are gone those areas need to be repaired with a flashing screwed and caulked.
Just repairing the soffit will not work the raccoon will come back and rip through it remember they leave pheromones.

Bats the most common flying pest that we get calls for.
Bats are easy to identify because you can see them flying in and out of your home early in the morning or late in the day.
They also leave an undescribable stench from their guano and pheromones.
When I get calls for bats in Brevard county I usually can find the entry point just walking up to the front door because you will see dark areas around the entry point and black guano all over the walls or walkway.
When a home has bats it’s typically in the front of the home because that’s where all your soffit returns are you can hear them squeaking you can also see the accumulation of guano and as I stated earlier the stench.
I would say most structures in Brevard county that get bats are multi-unit buildings because they are tall, tile roofs because they have many gaps for the bats colonies to live in and shingle roofs because they have typically multiple roof returns with openings into the Attic.
Ridding a home of bats is a 3 -step process the first step is what I like to call a pre-seal up that is where we go around and seal everything on the building that a bat could get in but we will not seal where the bats are using to go in and out.
The next step we will either apply a batnet or cone which will allow the bats to leave the building but not re-enter I guess you could say it tricks them out of the building because they use sonar.
The third and final step is simple after all of the bats have exited the structure you simply pull the netting or cone off and seal the last hole then you would obviously proceed with any type of cleanup which most of the time is needed.

Eraticators animal removal is dedicated to resolving your squirrel problem in the most efficient and safest way possible, however the length of this time to resolve the many potential problems varies; each squirrel trapping attempt is unique in its own way. There are multiple considerations that can affect how long it takes to trap the squirrels. Squirrels are one of the quickest mammals on land, so catching them can be quite tricky. They have some of the best reflexes, but squirrels can be outsmarted by us using all sorts of traps.

What Type Of Traps are Used?

Trap Mounted on a Hole

If you are needing to trap a squirrel because you are hearing noises in your attic, this is the most common setup to get rid of the squirrels. Isolate the primary entry/exit hole, and mount a repeater trap, which catches all the squirrels at once as they exit. This trap is humane and has been used for many years to catch squirrels. They have been used for many years to catch squirrels because they offer the quickest and safest method of squirrel trapping. This squirrel trap can catch within minutes or days, squirrels like to move around a lot so the trap usually works pretty quickly. Eraticators has all of the equipment and expertise to make this process very quick and affordable compared to many other pest removal companies.

Multiple Traps Bolted to a Soffit Opening or Attic Opening

In many cases, there is a wide hole that may have been chewed or broken open. When a technician mounts multiple traps over the hole, with nose type cones attached to them, they will catch all the squirrels as they come out of the side area of the attic where the soffit is. These traps work great by covering a larger area and work just as quickly as the repeater traps used to catch squirrels. If you hear noises in your attic, then see some larger holes in your soffit, this may be the correct squirrel trap for you. It is not an easy task to set these up, that is why we recommend Eraticators Attic Animal Removal to come out and have it done right.

Cage Trap Mounted on Roof Outside your Attic

In some instances, there may be no way to set a repeater trap to help solve the issue. Many times it is best to set multiple cage traps on the roof, near the entry holes to your attic. We make sure the cages are secure and the squirrels will be trapped in a very safe and effective way. Many people will go to town trying to buy multiple traps, but many times doing it on your own may prove to be costly and time consuming. You have to know where to set them, and what to use to lure the squirrels into the trap. Cage Traps can be useful if there are no other options as they are usually the least efficient traps used to capture and rid yourself of squirrels in the attic. Eraticators have the top experts in the industry with excellent reviews. We service Brevard County and beyond. Call us today for a free quote!

Before undertaking the reduction control of squirrels, it is important to check with the local wildlife or conservation agency because some species are threatened or endangered or protected.

Wire screen cage-style box traps (such as the Kage-All® Small Animal Trap) are the most appropriate live capture and release trap for squirrels. Wire-screen cage-style traps are more durable than those made of sheet metal. These traps are best left to the experts, but if you have to use them, please give us a call first.

For best results, traps should be pre-baited for several days with the doors secured in an open position; when the bait is readily taken, the traps can be reset and baited. Baited sets are the most widely acceptable and sure-fire of trap sets for catching nuisance squirrels in your home or attic.

Blind sets are most successful in the taking of squirrels. For example, if the squirrel is inside the building and is using only one or two small entry holes, a live trap can be fixed across the openings, leaving the squirrel no option except to enter the trap to leave the area he has been hiding in. Open trail sets are generally ineffective due to the cautious nature of squirrels. When faced with a trap in its path, the agile squirrel will usually find a way to avoid the trap. They are not going to be forced into anything. Many times traps will not work so its time to call in the experts.

Be certain all the target squirrels are removed prior to the repair of the entry hole or holes. A squirrel can do extensive and unnecessary damage in its efforts to escape or return through a premature repair job so it is best to call the experts at Eraticators before it’s too late!
